The View from Here

The world changed.

By Aymara Lorente

When you look outside, if you only pay attention to the buildings, the trees, and the singing of the birds everything seems the same, untouched. But the whole world recently changed, from one minute to the next, when we heard, when we finally faced the truth of the Coronavirus. One morning we woke up to the new reality, to this nightmare. What caused it? I exactly don't know for sure; however, I am certain of what allowed its spread: the secrecy and totalitarian control of the communist government of China. They propagated this deadly virus.

Before, most humans were invested only on the quest for happiness and content, which is different for everyone, or concentrated on our family, daily dreams, our work. I thought everything was under control, my health, and my plans for the immediate future. But now the ugly side of reality suddenly appeared, equalizing all of us. We have to act as everybody else, look for the same basic material things. Trusting in God's supreme powers will help us survive and keep our sanity as well. I'm impressed to see how well people are behaving, so much discipline and caution, and the quiet care they have displayed.

Only a few days ago our thoughts were occupied by more specific or particular ideas or problems, and some of us were even focusing on philosophical matters. But things that worried us before now seem so unimportant. At that time maybe the virus was already alive and spreading, who knows since when, but we didn't have a clue. That's why many people fell victim of it, everywhere, and, unfortunately,  many more will succumb.

For now things like politics, the ferocity and bias of the press, and other demons of our times have to be overlooked. Everything that make us weak should be abandoned, put aside for the time being. Hopefully, we'll learn our lesson. Most people here are doing what is right for our country and the world, to protect the most vulnerable. We have to focus on what is best for everyone, continue following health guidance and using common sense, thinking about others in danger, before ourselves. We cannot ignore this pandemic, or most of us will be victims, one way or another, of this modern plague.

The streets are almost deserted. This Saturday feels so different.
